Bulgaria won against Belarus with 2:0 in the European
qualifications
Bulgaria won against Belarus with 2:0 as a guest in a match from G group of Euro 2008. The
captain Dimitar Berbatov scored in 28th and 47th minute and kept the chances for ranking in the
European finals in Austria and Switzerland next year. This was a victory debut for the selectionist
Stanimir Stoilov. During the whole match the Bulgarian national players exerted pressure and stayed
better on the field. From the very beginning our team had clearer positions. In the beginning
Martin Petrov missed from a free kick and the captain Dimitar Berbatov in 23rd minute hit the
crossbar. But after that the forward of Tottenham did not miss and opened the result in 27th
minute. The captain of the national team made an incredible break and passed through five defenders
of the hosts and stood at a good goal position. From there with a strong hit did not leave chances
to the goal-keeper Zhevnov and made the result 1:0. Thus ended the first half-time. From the very
beginning of the second part of the match our team made its advantage better and in practise
ensured their victory. Berbatov scored and the second goal. Martin Petrov moved onwards the left
wing, reached the outline and from there passed to Berbatov, who was standing at the penalty point
and shot with precise hit, when the door-keeper could not react. After this goal the players of
Belarus bettered their play and made a few attacks, which met the Bulgarian defence and there were
not dangerous attacks before Ivankov’s goal. Our footballers on their part slowed down the play but
held the things under control. The Bulgarian national players used every possibility to
contra-attack and at a break of Hristo Yovov the result almost became classical. The footballer
from Levski moved onwards the right, entered the penalty area of Belarus, passed the ball parallel
with Zhevnov’s goal, but the defence of the hosts coped with this and cleared the ball into a
corner. The hero Dimitar Berbatov also missed some goal situations. He missed to score a hat-trick
but did his work perfectly, scoring two goals for our team. In the long run with these very
important three points, our national players kept their chances for ranking in the European finals.
For that purpose the elected players by the interim selectionist Stanimir Stoilov will have to
repeat their victory at the match in Sofia at the national stadium “Vasil Levski” on Wednesday.
